We’ve all been there. You’re in an important business meeting or out on a hot date when, like a teenager with tourette’s, your Android phone suddenly moans “droid” or chimes or makes some other embarrassing and unexpected noise. It seems like no matter how many individual applications’ notifications set to silent, something will pop up and make noise, often at the most inappropriate times. Fortunately, there’s an easy way to quiet all your notifications with one setting while still getting their notices on screen.
- Navigate to the settings menu. You can get to the settings menu by tapping the gear icon in the notification drawer or by launching it from the apps menu.
- Tap Sound to view the sounds menu.
- Tap Default Notifications to see a list of available notification sounds.
- Select Silent as your sound if it is available. If there is no Silent sound, follow these steps to add one.
- Download the .10 second silent MP3 from Xamuel. You can download a file in Chrome for Android by long pressing it and selecting Save Link. Alternatively, you could record a a 1 second or shorter blank MP3 on your computer using a program Windows recorder or Audacity.
- Launch your file manager and navigate to the downloads folder (usually the /Download folder on your internal storage)
- Copy or move the MP3 to your notification sound folder (usually /Notifications)
- Reboot your phone.
- Return to the notifications sound menu in settings where your new silent sound will appear as an option.
